STYLES OF DANCE
Here is a brief overview of the styles that we offer.
BALLET
Students can begin their ballet training as early as age 5 at Dance Net Studios. We believe that it is important to learn the foundations and basics of dance in a ballet class.
POINTE
Offered to students ages 10 and up. After several years of consistent ballet training and close evaluation by the DNS staff. Recommendation only.
CONTEMPORARY
Originating from ballet, contemporary uses more body motions and fluidity. Typically for more advanced dancers.
LYRICAL
Typically called "the storytelling of dance", this style uses ballet and contemporary influence to portray a story of some sort to the audience. It teaches dancers acting skills and to have emotion when they are on stage.
JAZZ
A combination of movement, like turns and leaps, to excuse fast passed motions. Usually referred to as the sassy numbers.
TAP
Any style of dance executed with tap shoes. Most of the time, it is done with upbeat music and choreography, similar to jazz. But it is open to any music.
ACRO
Short for acrobatics, this routine would consist of mostly acro tricks and tumbling skills. Typically done in large numbers. There may be small acro and tumbling skills in other styles of dance, but this style is made up of at least 75% of acro and tumbling skills.
HIP HOP
Using footwork and body movement, and sometimes acro and tumbling. Executed without any jumps or turns, but rather with only "popping and locking", and also may contain breakdancing.
PRODUCTION/OPEN
Mostly done in very large groups, surrounding one "theme" or topic. A combination of all styles, but can also be considered its own style. Open numbers can be done as solos, duets, trios, or groups, but production numbers are only for very large groups.
